A transcript of the interview appears below:

Fan Club: Andy is currently in Calgary on a rehab assignment, can you give us an update on his progress?

Perez: Well, he went up there to play, and he got hurt, he hurt his forearm and he’s not played lately. We’re just waiting for him to play some games and he can be called up. Right now, I don’t know, he’s day by day and he hasn’t played in the last 3 or 4 days. I don’t know when he’s going to be ready to come up.

Fan Club: In Calgary, Andy has been reunited with Chris Chambliss who was the Yankee’s Hitting Coach when Andy played in New York. Was that a factor in sending Andy for his rehab to Calgary rather than say, Broward County where he would have been closer to the team?

Perez: Well we want him to play, to face good pitching, better pitching than A-ball because we want him ready when he comes up. I think Calgary is much better, it’s a triple-A team and we’ve got Chambliss there and Chambliss may be able to help him because he knew him [Andy].

Fan Club: You were “special assistant to the GM” prior to becoming manager of this team. Do you think it will be an adjustment for Andy to return to the club with a different manager?

Perez: No, I know Andy, I’ve been around Andy since he got here. I don’t think there are going to be any changes, anything. When he comes back he’s going to be ready to play, ready to help us. I don’t think he’s going to be a regular but he will fit and help my team because he’s a guy I can use off the bench and he’s got speed, he can play different positions, plus he can hit.

Fan Club: Was this the first time you’ve seen Andy play, here in Florida?

Perez: Yeah, I’ve been working for the Marlins since ’93, I travel with the team and do everything as Assistant to the General Manager. I saw Andy play last year and the year before here.

Fan Club: Did you have any part in bringing Andy to Florida, the trade for Danny Bautista?

Perez: Well, no that was the General Manager but we talked about it and we got him here.

Fan Club: ESPN the Magazine did an article last year where they said that Andy was not deserving of the attention paid to him by the fans. Do players hear about these types of articles and if so, how does it affect them?

Perez: No I never heard about that, I don’t know with Andy, whether he read about that. I can not comment on that because I didn’t know about that. I don’t think it bothers the players what anybody writes.

Fan Club: How much of a role do statistics play in scouting players like Andy Fox? Do you think that valuable players like Andy are often overlooked by the scouts?

Perez: No, you need, on your team, players like Andy because he plays different positions. He’s a good athlete and he runs well, he hits…you can use him, he’s valuable for a team.
